Goa Nightlife – Lighting up the Coast, Dancing with the Waves

Goa Nightlife Lighting up the Coast, Dancing with the Waves

Nightlife in Goa is one of its most unique and well-reputed draws, as would be expected of the tourist city. The coastal state is one of India's leading holiday destinations in terms of world tourism, with its happening golden beaches and crowds of the youthful and energetic creating an intriguing contrast with the old-world charm of the old Portuguese colonial outpost. As vibrant and festive as its beaches are by day, by night they transform into an ever more dazzling kaleidoscope of sights and sounds. The Goan nightlife rivals that of the most developed metropolises in India, as a result of the international tourist boom it experienced since the hippie hey-day of the 1960s. The coastal areas of the state appear to be eternally suffused in a party atmosphere. The rave parties that were spawned during the age of Woodstock are still in vogue, but though the alcohol and curfew laws are liberal, the state crackdown on nudity, hard drugs and drunk driving is seeing their popularity declining steadily. The raves have now transformed into what is known as "trance parties", a uniquely Goan musical party phenomenon. These events run well into the wee hours and feature live entertainment and strict liquor control. Anjuna is indubitably the king of its thumping beats, with the usual suspects of Calangute, Colva, Baga and Dauna Paula all close on its heels. Goa offers a bewildering array of nightclubs, the most popular of which are generally found along the beaches. Tito's at Baga Beach is chief among these, as well as Lido's at Dauna Paula, Ziggy's at Colva and the "Beachotheque". Casinos are an increasingly popular haunt of the high-rollers in Goa. Most of these are offered aboard cruise liners in and about the state, but there are quite a few in the mainland as well. The beach resorts Majorda, Cicade de Goa, and Leela Palace house glittering casinos open to the public and feature all the gambling classics such as blackjack, roulette, craps and baccarat. In the category of luxury entertainment, another option fast gaining popularity are Goa night cruises aboard luxury yachts. Featuring on-board music, dancing and feasting, these ships take passengers through a montage of cityscapes, such as the banks of the Mondovi River, the capital of Panjim, the Aguada Fort and Reis Magos. You can also hire one of these vessels to host private parties and functions. Despite the government's efforts to encourage luxury travel over backpackers, this destination still abounds with plenty of budget options for the traveller who prefers the more inexpensive, simpler pleasures. Of the extensive beachfront properties all catering to the hoi-polloi of tourists wandering in and out at all hours, one is sure to find an informal bar-and-restaurant at almost every other house. The bars and pubs are usually laid-back; the well-reputed of these are concentrated on the beaches of Anjuna, Calangute, Candolim and Baga. These informal little eateries all offer delectable Goan seafood delicacies and chilled beer. Beachside shacks are also novel haunts, hosting barbeques and beach bonfires where you and your friends can sit in a circle and be serenaded by the strains of sea wave and mandolin. Those looking for a resort in Goa are recommended The Retreat by Zuri Goa. This luxury Goa resort is located in the exclusive Benaulim Beach, balancing secluded serenity and festive excitement while offering luxury accommodation and stellar service.
