Goal Setting - Quick Guide That Really Works


Since we were young, we have always had dreams or goals of what we wanted to be. Some wanted to be doctors, fireman, lawyers, sports player, etc. Sometimes our goals or desires were more specific such as owning a certain car, buying a house, or completing a collection of an interest you have. These are examples of goals, dreams or desires that we think of for ourselves but there is more to it than just thinking of things we want, there needs to be action in order to reach those things.

There are many different methods to effectively setting your goals. Here are five of the basic ones.

1. Write down your goals.


Our brains have the ability to save information and remember so many things that if we didn't write down our goals, they would be "lost" in all that gets stored. The best thing to do is write them down and ways you can make them happen. By writing down your goals and how to get there, you can see how far you have progressed and to check that you are still on the right track. Make sure you keep your goal list where you can see it often during your day and be creative when making your list.

2. Your goals should be something you truly want, not just to impress people.

Goals will not work if you are doing it only to awe other people. Goals must be something you really want. These must be things that will make you happy and benefit yourself and only you since you will be the one that will be working towards its fulfillment.

3. Avoid setting goals that contradict each other.

As a way of example, if you bring in $800/month, then setting a goal of putting aside $500/month isn't realistic because trying to live on only $300/month is very difficult. Though saving money is a very good goal setting it for an amount that is doable otherwise you will get frustrated and give up.

4. Put as much detail when setting a goal.


The details will help you identify the steps needed to reach your goal. For example, "buy a $99 iPod shuffle in one month" is easier to work towards than just simply setting "buy an iPod". The details will make your goal setting easier to achieve and give you more satisfaction because you will not be confused as to how to reach it nor will you waste time with "what if's" along the way.

5. Avoid straying - Stick to your goals.

By using the example previously used, if you set a goal of putting aside a certain dollar amount each month, then be consistent and do it, not part of it thinking you will make it up next month. You will fall behind and get frustrated. This will defeat the purpose of setting goals, both short and long term.

The success of effective goal setting is to be consistent and disciplined. You must know exactly what you want in order to get what you want and more. It is not hard to set your goals as long as you know where you want to end up. Keep these tips in mind every time you get ready to set your goals and it will be easy to reach them.
