What's the biggest unachieved goal you have? You can begin to make progress by using a tool called a Goal Setting Worksheet

.

Clearly identify the goal in measurable terms and write it down.

A lot of goals aren't reached because they're too nebulous. If you say "I will save a lot of money over the next six months" you probably won't! But if you say "I;m going to have $100 per week automatically debited from my account, it's going to happen. The second option is the one that is clear and measurable, a much better goal statement, with a much higher likelihood of success.

What is your reason for wanting to reach this goal?

If it is a fitness goal, your motivation may be tied to a desire for a long active life. A financial goal may be tied to a desire for more security. Write down every reason. This is about identifying your core drivers and even values. When a goal is anchored in your deepest motivations, it is more likely you will stick with it when it's difficult.

Identify the barriers that make it difficult to reach this target.

All significant goals have significant barriers. Identify them. Maybe you are flabby and out of shape because your job has long commute and you sit on your butt all day. Maybe you travel a lot and have never figured out a way to eat right in restaurants. Maybe you have a huge debt that makes it hard to save. Make a comprehensive list of all the issues.

What is the cost of reaching this goal?

One of the reasons we don't reach our goals is because of the cost, the sacrifice, the pain. You need to know going in that there will a real cost to reaching that goal. Ask yourself if you are truly prepared to make that sacrifice.

What information or skills do I need if I am to achieve this goal?

Most big goals require us to grow personally in knowledge or skill. If you can figure out where the gaps are from the outset and begin to fill them, you will progress toward your goal very rapidly.

Is there someone who can walk with me toward this goal?

Another way of asking this is "Who has already achieved something like the target I am shooting for? if you can link up with them in some way- face to face, online, via telephone- you can build on their success and discipline and lessons and harness those things to move toward your own success. Either way, this person is often the difference between success and failure in goal setting.

List everything that needs to happen to hit the mark.

I like to simply write these things out as they come to mind, with no real regard for order or priority. Just get down every logical step so you can see exactly what is required. This is another reality check stage, but it can also be quite encouraging since your large goal has been reduced to bite-sized chunks!

Boil the long list down to the three obvious items.

At this point you simply synthesize all the points from the previous step into the three logical big steps that will get you to your destination. For instance, back to the fitness scenario, it might be to establish a better eating-out routine; to join a fitness club; and to work out three times a week.

What are the regular habits and routines I need to establish to get this done?

Whatever you do, do not skip this step. Goals are achieved due to the habits we start or the habits we stop. Think about that for a second. Your life = your habits. Where we end up is simply the logical result of our habits.

Do I really really really want to do this?

This is the final reality check before moving into action. Now that you know all that will be involved in reaching this goal, how badly do you want it? Or, has the hard truth about what it will take made the status quo more appealing?

Do something now to get the ball rolling.

This is very important. If you come to the end of this exercise and you are not prepared to take immediate action, well, the odds of you achieving the goal have just dropped dramatically. If however you will do one little thing right now, you're on the road and it will happen!
