Going Green And Green Energy Tariffs
Going green is a buzzword with an increasing appeal on energy consumers in Europe in general and the United Kingdom in particular
. With an increasing awareness of the necessity for going green come questions, concerns and issues with the matter. In this article, a few of the most pressing issues will be discussed so that readers can make the shift from conventional to green energy with as little hassle as possible.
Cost Concerns:
Renewable energy systems from sources like the sun, wind and biomass appear costly to install but such an urban myth is quickly dispelled for three main reasons.
First, local governments offer incentives for home owners and business owners for the installation of renewable energy systems. With tax rebates, discounts and other incentives, green energy systems become more affordable than previously thought of.
Second, green energy systems require little to no maintenance during their lifetimes. Let's take solar panel systems, which only require the occasional wiping to keep dust, dirt and other debris off the surface of said panels.
Third, green energy systems can be hooked up to the main grid. In many cases, home owners even sell the electricity produced by their renewable energy systems to the utility company! It is called net metering, which works for the home owners' benefit more than it does for the commercial electricity provider. In the end, going green is a route that pays for itself.
Behavioural Concerns:
There are also concerns about changing behaviours among consumers hooked up to green energy systems. In reality, green energy requires little to no behavioural changes for home owners and business owners in the conduct of their daily lives and operations, respectively.
The energy consumption in terms of number of appliances and the number of hours plugged in can stay the same but the amount of money spent on energy will be lower with green energy tariffs. Well, of course, if you want to further lessen your carbon footprint through the adoption of green energy practices, then by all means do so. Your energy bills will be lower, too.
Concerns As To Choice:
Let's assume that you have made the decision to adopt green energy in your home and office. Your next concern will be the exact type of green energy system for installation. Each one, of course, has its fair share of pros and cons so it's best to sit down and consider your choices before making your final decision.
The choices for customers where green energy tariffs are:
Green Source Tariffs - In this arrangement, every unit of electricity consumed by the energy user is matched by a unit of energy bought from a renewable energy supplier such as a wind farm, a hydroelectric plant, or a solar panel system. This is also called an energy match.
Green Fund Tariffs - A certain amount of money charged by the electric company is set aside and subsequently used to fund programs and projects for the development of renewable energy sources. In most instances, the fund is used for the construction of wind farms, hydroelectric plants and solar panels although it can also be used for research and development efforts.
Carbon Offset Tariffs - In this arrangement, the carbon emissions of the fossil fuelled electric plant are not reduced but are instead offset by carbon-reducing projects in remote locations. The most common carbon-reducing project is reforestation.
No matter which of these forms of green energy tariffs you choose, the more important thing is that you are actually taking the first steps toward green energy. The first step is, after all, often the hardest and yet the most crucial in any change for the better.
