Golf Course Etiquette For Beginners

You are getting ready to play your first round of golf

. This can be exciting but also nerve wracking and a little intimidating to even the most confidant beginner. Before you hit the golf course, it helps to know some of the proper etiquette that is required. Knowing what the etiquette is all about can make the first round of golf you play that much easier for you to do.

You want to take the right equipment with you when you show up on the golf course. This is associated with both the rules, as well as the etiquette of the game. According to the rules, there is a limit of 14 clubs to be placed in each bag. There is no minimum amount, just a maximum amount.

Borrowing clubs from another player is not a particularly good idea. Under certain circumstances it is allowed during a round, but in most instances, it is against the rules. As a beginner, the smartest thing to do is to make sure that you have up to 14 clubs in your golfer's bag.

Before you leave for the golf course, check to see if you have plenty of golf balls and tees with you. You will likely lose a fair amount of balls your first time around, so be prepared! It would also be a smart idea to take a ballmark repair tool with you so once you are out on the greens you will have something handy to repair with.

When you reserve a tee time, which is required for most places, you should show up on time. This is golf course etiquette 101. Or even better, show up at least 30 minutes early so you can get a warm up in before you start to play. Find out what the policies for the course are ahead of time. You may have to call the day before to reserve your time, or you may have to call several days before. The earlier you arrive, the more practice you can get in.

Many courses have dress codes so you must dress the part. Find out what the code is and dress accordingly. In most cases, a collared golf shirt and a pair of khaki slacks or shorts will be appropriate but it is always wise to find out beforehand.

Golf shoes will be required at some locations, but not at others. This is usually up to the individual golfer to decide. The same can be said for golf gloves. It may not be a requirement but it may be a preference of yours.

Tipping is something you will have to do at some golf courses, so make sure you have some extra money on you when you go to play. It is rarely an issue at a course run by the municipality. However, if you are at a private or semi-private course you will need to tip the cart jockeys.
