College sports scholarships are a win-win type of situation for both a student athlete and the college itself. The student avails of tuition perks, while the school can boast of the acclaim whenever the student athlete wins a state-wide competition.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) can give you the chance to avail of these types of athletic scholarships. Being the primary athletic conference in the U.S., the NCAA does not offer athletic aid in the strictest sense of the word, but will give you, as a qualified student athlete, assistance in the form of grants or financial support that will be based on your athletic performance. Most of these grants and aids cover as much as 50% of tuition fees.

College athletic scholarships given by the NCAA under the Division I and Division II levels are based on what is known as 'equivalency' or 'headcount' sports. Headcount sports from either DI or DII level are allotted a certain number of scholarships that cover your tuition, school fees, as well as room and board. To make the grade, you will have to work hard at being among the best players in your sport in high school. The level of competition in college sports is very high, and student athletes who qualify for Division I schools are among the elite players in their sports category. Make sure you start promoting your cause to college coaches, and marketing yourself as a potential athlete scholar to the college of your choice. You'll need to compose a good cover letter, include your athletic resume, and send these together with periodic updates on the various sports competitions you have entered, addressed to the college coach of your school of choice.
