Now more than ever there is a need for financial and college scholarships in particular. Personal bankruptcies soared through 2009, up 32 percent from the year before. Logic dictates that many of the people affected by the bankruptcy filings are students who wish to attend college.

Likewise, we can also look at the current high unemployment rate - 10 percent. Additionally, there are millions who are "underemployed" as well. This term refers to those who have part-time and lesser paying jobs because they cannot find the full-time employment they are seeking.

So now we have established that Americans are suffering financial hardships left and right. During times like these, many parents simply lack the means of paying out of pocket for their children's college education. And this is where scholarships and government scholarships in particular can be of major importance.

But to access these government scholarships (and this point is particularly key) - a person must first find these scholarships and then apply for them. Scholarships don't simply fall into people's laps as if by some magical, unseen force. No, indeed. There is the saying that to the victor goes the spoils, but in this case one could use the saying that If you snooze - you lose. Plain & simple.

Therefore, it's imperative that we act quickly if we are to seize the day and set sail as it were on the sea of our future journey across the oceans and waterways of our academic journey. Who knows what exciting and fantastical encounters await us in the name of academic pursuit.About the Author:
