Govt Action 'needed To Help Commercial Gas And Electricity Users'

Users of commercial gas and electricity are keen to keep their costs down and to use as eco-friendly sources for the utilities as possible.

Speaking on their behalf recently, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said the government must do more to encourage the production of low-emissions power.

In its report "No time to lose: Deciding Britain's energy future", the organisation said the coalition administration must deliver key energy and planning reforms within six months.

If it fails to do so, it risks undermining emissions targets and energy security, the trade body claimed.

The CBI suggested that without clarity on state policy, 150 billion of private sector investment in low-carbon infrastructure would fail to materialise.

This could have a significant impact on business gas and electricity users across the country.

According to the confederation, uncertainty about the planning regime is the most worrisome issue for enterprises keen to provide green power.

The CBI has called for a number of measures to be implemented by the government by the end of February next year.

Among them are the speeding up of the development of carbon capture and storage technology and the provision of more detail concerning electricity market reform.

In addition, the coalition must tackle delays in the planning system, it noted.

If the government does not address these issues, commercial gas and electricity users may suffer, the organisation said.

Deputy director-general of the CBI John Cridland remarked: "Uncertainty on plans for electricity market reform, slow progress on clean coal and nuclear power, as well as the cost of renewable energy are adding to the mood of caution among investors.

"We need investment from companies, not delays from government."

Having a competitive market concerning green energy providers may be crucial for business gas and electricity consumers as the tough economic conditions still affecting the economy continue to make themselves felt.
