Let's start with paper. Rather than always using brand new paper, choose to use papers that are high in post-consumer content. These papers come from previous consumer use, and are recycled. If you choose this option for you paper, find out how the paper went from slightly muddy yellow to the bright white it is now.

When you consider paper that has high quantities of recycled elements within it, you want to be certain of two things. The first is that the paper will be as bright as you need it to be. But most importantly, you need to know what levels and types of chlorine was used to give your paper that white look. Look for paper which has been produced using Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) processing when choosing paper with a high recycled content. When purchasing virgin (no-recycled content) paper, look for the TCF (also known as Totally Chlorine Free) emblem on your package of paper.

Instead of buying the same old wood-pulp based paper, consider trying a paper produced from other more renewable resources. Try hemp paper, bamboo paper, or paper made from flax. Some paper manufacturers are even trying to capture the market share by producing paper from recycled pop cans or plastic bottles. Use a paper that suits your needs, and that is easily recyclable or renewable once more.

Of course, it is practically impossible to get everyone on board for the paper-less office. Until the concept is implemented thoroughly, eliminating the need for paper in the personal business place, remember to use environmental practices to reduce the amount of paper that you have going to the landfill. If you have always printed on just one side of the page, rather than dumping your paper directly into the recycle bin, opt to turn these single-sided pages into note pads for you and your employees. Then, recycle when the pages have been used. Set your printer up to print both sides of the page.

Ink. The bane of every business and every printer. While many printers are still stuck on using the traditional petroleum based inks, you can request more ecologically sane and sound inks for your printing needs. Ask for soy-based inks or vegetable based inks to reduce the amount of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) entering the atmosphere and the soil.

When you are thinking of doing a small or limited time offer for your business, digital printing can be the solution you are looking for. Not only does this offer you full four-color printing, it does this without the use of high-VOC inks. Digital printing mostly uses toners (which are non-toxic) and which produce less chemical waste than the typical petroleum based inks. That makes it quick and easy to have small runs of print projects like promotional pieces, stationery and business cards.
