Greene County, New York is an area of New York State that is rich in history and beautiful landscapes. At any given time throughout the year, if you are in Greene County you will be stunned by the pretty scenic views outside your window. Being surrounded by nature, and unable to deny that Mother Nature has endowed this area very well with her charms, there are also the amazing historical accounts that are well-known around the world.

Greene County can be included in many pages of the history books. It was first home to a sub-tribe of the Algonquin Native Americans, and just looking around as you stand outside you can almost feel the presence of them all around you and envision the type of life they must have lived. With so many beautiful mountains, creeks, wide-open fields and the huge sky one can understand how they would have loved their home.

Henry Hudson landed in what is now the village of Catskill in 1609. He was greeted by the friendly Algonquin and some years later, European settlers began to form communities near Catskill's natural harbor. In the 1700's Dutch fur traders, and farmers moved into the land and were happy with the farming conditions. Some of their historical homes still stand and have been restored to the scenic attractions that bring history buffs to Greene County each year.

By the 1800's much had changed, and many more people had settled in the New York area. Greene County was officially formed in 1800 by partitioning the area from Albany, and went through a few changes in size up until 1852 when it became what it is today. There are 14 towns and 5 villages in Greene County.

In the 19th century, Greene County became a popular resort area. Many well-to-do families came to see the panoramic mountain views, waterfalls, changes in season, great fishing and hunting, and rich homes built to cater to them. The biggest resorts in that time were the Hotel Kaaterskill and Catskill Mountain House. Sadly, these giants are no longer around, but there is an area in Hunter where visitors can go to see the remnants of this great era that led to the successful tourist trade that thrives to this day.

In today's times, many people come from in and out of New York State to stay in Greene County's many fun and relaxing resorts. Many of them have been meticulously maintained as a reminder of times not long ago when life was a bit slower, and much more focused on family and nature. Family values and small town courtesies are the norm in such a down-to-earth place.

Many of the people living in Greene County have found work in near-by Albany or Kingston, but still crave the wide open feeling of the small-town life. Homes are larger and have more character, yards are lush and surrounded by trees, and children have a closer relationship with nature because it is all around them.

Greene County has been shaped in to a rich masterpiece by the many historical events that have taken place. If you've never been to this part of upstate New York, you may want to plan a trip. It is sure to make a lasting impression, and may even become your next home. The friendly locals, just like the Native Americans in the past, will welcome you to join their way of life.
