Persistent doubts about the economy have business leaders conflicted and trying to balance needs to grow their businesses verses reluctance to expand their workforce.

Recently, a survey completed by Duke University/CFO Magazine revealed that about three-quarters of respondents are expecting growth. Despite survey results, U.S. employers expect to increase their full-time employee base less than one percent over the next year on average.

Findings show that businesses plan to make investments in technology, research and development, equipment and marketing in order to support growth, with plans to increase the productivity of the existing workforce at the same time. If business leaders want to achieve these desired results, they must make it a priority to create a culture that encourages accountability.

The key to shifting this attitude is by first determining whether your organization is a "Want-to" Culture or a "Have-to" Culture. But, where do these attitudes come from? "Have-to" Cultures tend to develop when supervisors or business leaders demonstrate the following behaviors: Attack, Control and Confuse. Such behaviors often result in employees rejecting responsibility and not taking accountability.

On the other hand, in a 'Want-to' Culture, employees will accept responsibility and will be accountable when their supervisors or business leaders demonstrate the following behaviors: Approach, Care and Clarify. This is referred to as the A-C-C Model. Companies that achieve this cultural change will have the unlimited potential to grow their business in any marketplace, in any economy.
