Growing Tomatoes From Seeds Is Easy

It seems to be a little known fact that growing tomatoes from seeds is possible

. Most varieties are available in seed form for gardeners of all types. The seeds are very easy to grow and produce fruits that are just as good and bountiful as those that come from transplants.

The first thing you need to do in order to start growing your own tomatoes from seeds is to figure out where you are going to place them. Areas like window sills or outside balconies are best in the beginning. Some type of planting tray is needed to put the seeds in and you need to evenly space them throughout the tray. You will need warm conditions for the best results so the window sill is ideal. If you are worried about the soil drying out to quickly from all the sunlight you can cover the tray with plastic wrap at this time.

At about 8 weeks into the growing process your plants should have grown to at least a couple of inches in height. It is now time to transplant them to containers that are a little bit bigger. You can also separate them into individual containers at this time as well. Be careful when digging up and moving them right now though because the plants are still very fragile and prone to breakage.

Fill your chosen containers with soil then dig out a hole big enough for the plant. After you have placed the plant in the hole you can fill in around it with some more soil and lightly press it in around the roots. After this the seedlings need to be kept in sunlight some more and given adequate amounts of water so they can thrive.

When the plants have grown to about six inches you will need to do another transplant into a little bit bigger container. At this age they can be placed outside if you want. Being outside will help the seeds to harden and produce much healthier plants.

As long as you notice the plants starting to sprout a good amount of leaves and you are providing the needed sunlight and warmth they will continue to grow at a rapid pace at least a few more inches. This is when it will be time for one last transplanting. This last transplant will be done a bit differently though. When you bury the roots you will need to place the plant deep enough to cover everything except about four of the leaves that will be left above ground. Doing this at this age will help the roots to gain strength and produce a better fruit bearing plant.

Strong plants are better capable of holding up the heavy fruits they produce. Weaker plants can easily break from the weight and ruin any chance of a harvest that you had. Be sure to give your plants the warmth, sunshine and water that they need to thrive. Be especially cautious during transplant so you won't damage the plant in any way.

Being able to grow and produce your own tomatoes in the convenience of your own home makes it much easier for you and your family to eat healthy and avoid all the chemicals that are used on commercially processed varieties. Not having to buy tomatoes every time you visit the grocery store can also save your family a lot of money.
