Growing Up and Learning Life’s Lessons By Having Pets in the House

Its been a long time since I was a kid, but its hard to remember a time that I never had a pet

. The first pet we ever had was a beautiful yellow canary, Chippie. We loved that bird and took great care of him. Even as a child he was an important part of the family. So what could a canary possibly have given to us? He gave us beautiful songs every morning when we woke up. He chirped and sang every morning and that made us happy as heck. We fed him and fussed over him, making sure he was always well fed with his favorite foods, fruits and nuts. He repaid us in song. How cool is that? Our first life lesson was one of responsibility to care for such a fragile living thing. His care wasnt a burden it was a necessity we treated as a gift. We looked forward to getting up each and every day to whistle to Chippie and say good morning in the best bird language we knew. Chippie seemed to like it and this went on for about 4 years. Unfortunately while my dad was cleaning out the cage, somehow Chippie got out. At that time and in those days we lived in an apartment in the city. It was the middle of the summer, hot and unforgiving as heck. All the windows were wide open. Chippie flew out of the cage and right out the window. He took off into the trees and we went after him. As kids, what did we know? We figured he was just out for exercise. We took his cage and put food all over on the ground and figured when he was ready he would fly back in. He never did. We waited for what seemed like a lifetime but it was really about 6 hours. He sat in the same tree the whole time. I guess just enjoying his freedom. He never did come back. We all cried our eyes out. Life lesson number two; Life can be good, like when Chippie was with us, but it does have its downside. We needed to get thru it and move on. It was a tough thing we had to do but we got thru it. After Chippie we had gotten several dogs. First we had a mutt terrier we called Chip. Had him a few years then he was given away to a pet farm. It was too tough for him to stay in the apartment with all of us. We missed him when we let him go but it was never as traumatic as when we lost the canary. Several years later we moved into a house. We got a beautiful collie. We named her Bonnie. She was great and became a member of the family right away. She loved to play, and we could pretty much do whatever we wanted to her. Life Lesson number three; Animals teach us about and give us unconditional love. Its there for the taking and doesnt come with strings attached. Bonnie lived for 14 years and we loved her till the day we had to put her down. She taught us about caring for someone or something else. She was wise, and unassuming. She would protect any one of us if threatened, to her death if need be. How great is that? Since having the pets growing up and now there have been 4 more cats and six more dogs in our lives. A lot of the cats were strays that we eventually had to put down. We took care of them as long as possible, but they got old. Two of our Min Pins died at an early age. They were mother and daughter. One died at 5, the other at 6. They had bad kidneys. It ran in the family. TC is currently our oldest dog. He just turned 17. He was actually the uncle of the two that died. Hes still doing great and he takes everything in stride. Nothing bother him and he takes one day at a time. Life lesson number 4; Kick back and take it easy in life, dont sweat the small stuff. Tomorrow is another day. Besides TC we have a pair of twin girls. They are also Min Pins. They just turned 5 and are the love of our life. They are family. They give us a tremendous amount of joy, we play with them, they bark, we yell, they jump forever and I chase them around. Its all a big game. Thats life in or little part of the world. Animals are a wonderful addition to any family. They teach us responsibility, love, living life for the moment and to be just who we are. You dont get that from a book. Its something you develop over the years living with our wonderful little friends. Learn from them, take it slow like they do and go thru life learning its lessons while being a little happier for doing it. Thanks for Reading.
