. Gudhi Padwa comes on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and it is the commencement of the spring season or Vasant ritu in India. It is also celebrated as Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh, Baisakhi in Punjab and Bihu in Assam. The religious books mention that Lord Brahma created universe on this day, making it one of the important days for Hindus. It is normally celebrated by rasing Gudis on the house tops. The Gudhi or Gudi is a stick having an inverted copper Kalash on its top decorated with a brand new piece of green or yellow colored cloth. The Gudhi is supposed to bring prosperity and good luck to the family. In historic times the Gudhis were erected as a symbol of victory in war.

On this special New Years day, the members of the family eat a paste of Neem leaves and Jaggery after taking a special bath. The house is nicely cleaned; entrance doors are decorated with traditional Torans and fascinating designs of Rangoli in the entrance. Religious worship or Pooja is performed in every Maharastrian family. Gudhi Padwa is glorious regarding the nature cycle having historical and spiritual importance. On this day the waves consisting of the Tej Tatwa and creative Prajapati waves are activated on a massive scale. The divine consciousness projected during sunrise absorbed on this day lasts longer. It is stored in the body cells and can be used whenever required. Hence it is advisable to worship the Gudhi as early as possible after sunrise. The celebrations also include buying new clothes, valuable things like cars, bikes or electronic gadgets. Buying gold on this day is supposed to bring prosperity. This day is supposed to be sacred among the three and half Muhurtas in Hindu religion. So it is assumed as the best time to make new resolutions and start new ventures. Greetings are exchanged with relatives and neighbors on this day. The food prepared on this day includes Puran poli in which sweet puran is enclosed. Mostly the meals on this day include sweets like Shrikhand Puri, Jalebi or Basundi.

In modern times Gudhi Padwa is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm throughout Maharashtra. Especially in Mumbai and Thane huge processions called Shobha Yatras are carried out showcasing and focusing the traditional Maharashtrian men and women in their traditional attires as well as ornaments. The Shobha Yatras are accompanied with typical Lezim and music bands. New Year wishes are exchanged by sending SMS or sending greeting cards to the dear ones. This day is observed as a holiday and people visit their relatives or friends.
