Guide To Buying A Laptop

Buying a laptop is similar to buying a desktop

. Just keep in mind that components with the same similar capabilities of its desktop counterpart may be more expensive. This is due to increased manufacturing processes dedicated to make components smaller to fit the laptop's case. This is the reason buying a laptop is a bit harder than buying a desktop. Don't worry, though, I have compiled a list of hardware to be considered when buying a laptop:

Processor The laptop processor is usually low powered, due to the fact that it relies on energy from a battery that is easily exhausted. Also, there is no fan, so overheating of the PC may be eminent. There are different types of processors for different types of laptops, and depending on your needs, be it a replacement for a desktop or an Ultra Portable Laptop, you should choose your hardware based on your needs.

Battery Batteries are the power supply for your laptop. Persons who use DVDs and games will need to choose a battery with a higher capacity than those who surf the net and read email.

Memory Because laptops are so underpowered, a higher amount of memory and RAM with a greater frequency is needed. I recommend persons to look for DDR3 RAM with 2 GB of memory and 800mhz.

Hard Drive This component is far more expensive than its desktop counterpart. Persons on a tight budget may be inclined to choose a Hard Disk with a lower amount of memory integrated. Also, Hard Disks have to fit into a 2.5 form factor instead of a 3.5 form factor in the desktop PC. This translates to less overall space for storing information

Peripheral Devices Because of the lower space, due to small hard disk size, persons can use peripherals such as USBs and Memory Cards to supplement the dilemma of data storage. Also, an external hard disk can be used to store and back up PC information. Other peripherals can be used to enhance computing, such as speakers and microphone, and increase usability of the Laptop.

Monitor The size of the monitor is a main consideration for persons who want to entertain and game on their laptop. Therefore, it is recommended to buy a laptop with a minimum of 14".

Video Card In a laptop, this is mainly used to supplement the Video Display, or the Monitor. Also, this component is also subject to overheating. Careful consideration is needed to choose the correct Video Card to buy.

While Laptops are more expensive and less efficient than Desktop PCs, correct hardware choices can result in a well rounded Laptop, with the added benefits of mobility.
