Often, these anecdotes come from men who had their work done during the early days of transplant technology before more advanced techniques were developed. Sometimes, problems occur because the surgeon was poorly qualified and lacking in experience. Other times, complications arise because the patient is simply not a good candidate for the treatment. Some scarring in the donor area of the scalp is basically unavoidable when long strips of scalp are removed for transplantation. The most well-known problem with hair transplantation is the dreaded hair plug look. Bunches of hair sprout unnaturally from the forehead like doll hair and draw unwanted attention. This outcome was not unusual back in the 60s and 70s when the procedure was still in its infancy. Large grafts were taken and implanted into the balding area. For men who have had an older transplant procedure, corrections can sometimes be performed by splitting up the plugs into smaller sections and redistributing them over the recipient area.

One way to avoid both of these issues in the first place is to have follicular unit transplantation (FUT) done instead of the cheaper strip procedure or the outdated plug approach. The FUT technique involves taking thousands of individual pieces of scalp from the back of the head for grafting. The resulting tiny round scars are distributed over the donor area and heal much more quickly than a long strip incision. The transplanted follicles are inserted in miniscule slits in the scalp. This approach permits the hairs to be densely packed into the bald area to create a full, natural appearance. Not all hair transplant clinics offer this method, so be sure to check before you commit to a procedure.
