Handling Stress In A Business Environment
Many claim that a stress interview is aimed at gauging how good a candidate is at handling stress
, which is a situation that they are bound to be confronted with in a business environment. Although the intention is understandable, the fact of the matter is that eventually, a man cannot go on forever by handling stress well, sometimes the issue just gets to them. Businesses can do a lot to reduce the stress on their employees and this must be followed methodically. This would not only prevent employees from burning out but have a direct impact on the business as well.
Recognition
First and foremost in handling stress in the environment is to recognize the person who is stressed. Stress is like a contagious disease which can easily spread from one person to another. Thankfully, so is optimism. For this to happen, gauge your employees well by having a close eye on them. Stress has a direct effect on the mind and suddenly those who have been performing well would show below par performance. The body would give off many indications of stress, sweaty palms, tightening muscles, dizziness and a feeling of hopelessness. Look for these signs to be able to counter them well. Never overburden a stressed employee.
Humor
Laughter is the best medicine to handle stress. Create an environment where they take everything as funny. If there is a request from a client that is a little demanding, make it seem a little funny, sing a song and follow up the requirements and you will be amazed on how efficiently the work progresses. Appreciate the most humorous employee. Professionalism is not what you are; it is how you do it. Moreover, a funny environment is somewhere people would always want to return to which makes every day a challenge rather than a burden.
Leisure time
There must be adequate time for leisure. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so goes the saying which is true in every environment, and not just business. Encourage employees to venture out of the campus and do something different every once in a while. Having a leisure room that allows for free thought is a great way to get employees to cool off as well as have them build better products for your company! Consider this, Orkut, which was a very popular social networking site before Facebook steamrolled it, was born out of the leisure time which Google asked its employees to make use of. In fact, many products of Google were born this way.
Diversity
Engage in diverse projects so that the employee does not see themselves do the same thing day in and day out. Handling stress is much easier if employees have something new to look forward to frequently. Otherwise, monotony sets in and the employee starts to feel as if they have caged themselves within unseen boundaries.
Handling stress in this age of business is very important. When everyone requires fast solutions to their problems and requirements, they often forget that the person at the other end may be working twenty-four hours a day.
