Hanging A New Door
Before changing a door consult the local council surveyors office as the door may have to be fire resistant to comply with the legal requirements
. Most doors are made to a standard size; however, your door specialist can supply non-standard sizes and more unusual doors.
Before hanging a new door fit the hinges, any locks and, for an outside door, a letter box and weatherboard. Fit glass in a glazed door after it has been hung. On an internal door glass is held in place by strips of hardwood beading or moulding nailed to the recesses.
When you remove your old door be sure to remove the screws from the bottom hinge before the top hinge and ensure you have the weight of the door supported before removing the final screw.
Now to hang your new door:
1)Fit your door to the frame size mark with a pencil line where the door needs to be cut. Saw and then plane the cut edge smooth, leaving a 2mm gap on either side and at the top between the door and the frame. Allow 5-10mm at the bottom for a thick carpet.
2)Measure up the hinges you will need to check your new hinges fit where they old ones were attached in the frame. You may need to chisel excess wood if they are too large. Once in place, screw a single screw and make sure when the hinge is open the pivot stands out from the frame edge. Using a wedge to hold the door up, mark with a pencil where the hinges will sit.
3)Attach the hinges to the door unscrew the hinges from the frame and lay them on the edge of a door. Draw around the flaps and chisel out the area so that the hinges sit flush with the edge of the door. Fix in place with one screw per hinge.
4)With the door in place and supported by wedges fix the hinges to the frame again with single screws. Once you have checked it can open and close properly secure with the last screws.
These days there are a wide range of door designs and materials to choose from. Manufacturers even offer ranges of doors which are pre-fitted with handles, hinges, locks and colours so you will find it easier when it comes hanging your new door.
