Hard drives are the primary storage of a computer. These are also known as hard disks and HDD, and this is where all computer files and programs go. It is made by IBM in 1956 and originally it has a storage space of a few megabytes. Hard drives in the new millennium have a storage space of 320 GB to 2 TB and have a speed of 5400 to 7200 rpm (rotations per minute). A hard drive with a larger memory space and speed allows you to save more files and located them within seconds. It is much useful with people who are working on computer applications, animations or photo editing. For basic home functions, a simple hard drive will do the trick.

When you opened a hard drive, you can see thin discs stacked together with a metal head. These discs are called platters, and these are the ones used to store computer files and programs. Platters are attached to a spindle (just like an axe of a wheel), and is connected to a motor, which rotates the platters very quickly. A metal head strip with a little magnet puts all the files and programs on the platters and it also finds the needed files through detection. A little circuit or filmware attached to the bottom serves as the communication line between the hard drive and the motherboard. The recording of the files are the same as of recording in cassette tapes and tape recorders.

Originally, PATA or Parallel AT Attachment is used to connect the hard drive to the motherboard. It looks like a thick and flat cable and you need to connect it to the IDE or Integrated Drive Electronics attach to the motherboard. Now, it is slowly replaced by SATA (Serial AT Attachment) or also called as SCSI (Small Computer System Interface). It looks like a rounded short cable and you need to connect it to a special SCSI port. The advantage of SCSI over PATA is that the former saves more space in the CPU than the later. If you want a portable hard drive, then buy an external hard drive. The components of an internal hard drive is the same, only that it has a hard shell which could be stacked with other external hard drives and it comes with a USB or Universal Serial Bus cable.

There are also specific hard drives for specific gadgets. Laptops or notebooks have smaller hard drives that fit underneath. Other devices such as cell phones, video and music players and game consoles also have a hard drive made just for these. In the future, hard drives could be seen in smart appliances, cars, and robots.
