Ginseng: Nature's caffeine! Ginseng is a great way to increase your energy. It boosts your immune system, and increases your energy levels. If you are used to caffeine, you may not feel the effects right away- given it's a natural supplement, it works as a slow build rather than a rush, as with caffeine.
While you are at the health food store stocking up on ginseng, also check out Gotu Kola. Another herb that is packed with nutrients to increase your energy and get you feeling great. It has the added benefit of assisting with hyper tension, and depression. With Ginseng and Gotu Kola, you'd be pretty much on your way to feeling awesome in no time.
This is a biggie: drink your water! 80% of us don't drink the recommended amount of water each day, and that could be the key to your fatigue. Being dehydrated makes you tired, and caffeine in soda will make the problem worse. Caffeine will wear off, leading to crash hours later, but it's also a diuretic so you'll end up even more dehydrated. Aim for a 8 oz glass of water each hour. You'll feel an immediate difference!
If you aren't eating breakfast, that could be a major player in why you feel so horrible. Eating breakfast is the single most important mea l of the day. Why? First, you spend hours (ideally 8) resting and NOT eating or drinking, so your body definitely needs to replenish the stores. Secondly, during sleep your body using energy to heal and repair after your long day of working. It needs something to replace that when you wake up. So eat breakfast! If you run low on time, grab a piece of fruit or yogurt, or blend them together for a portable meal.
Statistically you aren't eating enough protein (girls, that particularly means you), which would greatly impact your energy throughout the day! Adding some protein to a meal helps you feel full longer, and keeps your blood sugar from spiking then crashing a few hours later. If you like smoothies, add some protein powder to the mix. Take some string cheese with your lunch, or a baggie of nuts if you are a vegetarian. Get more protein, and you'll feel a difference at the end of the day.
Adding some fiber to your diet will see your energy levels raise instantly. Fiber helps keep us full longer, which means our food takes longer to digest. The reason junk food leaves us feeling tired shortly afterwards is because it takes almost no time to digest. It's all sugar and no fiber! So get some fiber in there, and you'll find that you aren't crashing an hour or two after eating.
Keep your energy sustained throughout the day by exercising! It doesn't take much to get the benefits- just a 10 minute walk will get you feeling different. But do exercise! Our bodies actually crave movement, and will respond positively when you get it going. Start moving, and you will see that you are more energized, not less.
