She has already been a nurse for 26 years. Her grandparents had Parkinson's disease when she was younger. Her grandparents lived with her and her family, so she grew up helping them.
You can see her at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights since this is where she works. As a floating nurse she transfers to many other departments as she is needed. And while the US economy has slowed down, life at the hospital is as busy as ever. She shares that it seems like today, more patients want better service from hospitals. Due to the many demands of the public as well as the patients who are getting sicker, more issues need to be looked over in a shorter period.
Currently there has been a rise in the patient population in the hospitals as there are more old people. According to her, the hospital does not have that much nursing student in training. With what is happening is the economy today, more health care workers will be needed in the country. If people gave more time looking into what nurses do every day they will have a very different point of view with it. Though the role that nurses play has changed dramatically, the image has not.
The director at a nursing school in Moline said that the economic downturn and recent turn of events will only escalate the need for health workers and the likelihood is that the number of incoming students and the number of graduates of programs is just not going to meet the demand. An increase in the number of uninsured patients due to job loss creates a higher need for nurses in emergency rooms.
Nursing is the largest health care profession having about 2.5 million registered nurses nationwide. Many people regard nurses as inferior to doctors and only looks as them as a handmaid to the doctor.
The nursing field is supposed to be a woman's profession but these days one can see men working in it as well. According to a 2000 study done by the US department of Health and Human Services, there were around 5.9 percent of registered nurses which were male.
Typically a nurse experiences greater patient loads mandatory overtime and job hazards such as needle stick injuries, violent patients and back injury from moving patients. There is a huge expectation when one works in the operating and emergency rooms hence most nurses do not look forward to working here. These days, hospitals are always bargaining with nurses.
If there's a silver lining in all of this, it's that it might provide a larger pool of people interested in service careers. With nursing one is offered substantial income and good benefits though one needs to like caring for people. What they can get from their patients is something nurses cannot put a price on and is what makes their job worthwhile.
