I watch that film the other day with noise cancelling headphones: the experience was spectacular. James Cameron is a great director not only for his excellent camera angles but also for his choice of music and the sound environment he can create. Everybody remembers the soundtrack for the Terminator for example. In Avatar, the most obvious spectacular moments are the destruction of the big tree. But there other great scenes like they go in the floating mountains to catch Ikrans. So I strongly recommend you watch avatar with good quality headphones.
Jurassic Park:
Jurassic Park is a great dinosaur movie directed by Steven Spielberg. The special effects are one of the most beautiful you'll ever. I specially enjoy the T-Rex and the velociraptors. The reason why you should watch this movie with headphones is to listen to the T-Rex. It is so good that it might give you nightmares.
The Dark Night
The Dark Night is the best Batman movie ever. Superhero movies usually have great sound effects but The Dark Night might be the best in that regard. Furthermore, I rarely witnessed better acting than the Heath Ledger performance in this movie. You should definitely watch that movie at least once.
Heat
Heat is a gangster movie directed by Michael Mann. The casting is really great with actors like Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro or Tom Sizemore. Heat features one of the greatest action scenes in the history of cinema. This is a shooting scene between the police and some gangsters. The sound effects are really great. I'm sure you will remember that scene for a long time especially if you watch it with good quality headphones.
The Lord of the Rings
The universe created by JR Tolkien will mesmerise you. It's a magical world with a lot of depth. Peter Jackson managed to make 3 fabulous movies about Lord of the Rings. In all 3 movies, sound effects will make you feel really strong emotions. The soundtrack is also really good so all the reasons are there to watch this movie with headphones.
