Health Education Keeping You Healthy
The issues of development, environment and health are closely entwined
. This reflects the complex links between the social, economic, ecological and political factors that determine standards of living and other aspects of social well-being that influence human health. A healthy population and safe environments are important pre-conditions for a sustainable future. However, at the beginning of the 21st century, the education of many children and young people around the world is compromised by conditions and behaviors that undermine the physical and emotional well-being that makes learning possible. Hunger, malnutrition, malaria, polio and intestinal infections, drug and alcohol abuse, violence and injury, unplanned pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections are just some of the health problems we face. As a result, education policy-makers and teachers must embrace health promotion activities to achieve their goals. Schools must be not only centers for academic learning, but also supportive venues for the provision of essential health education and services.
There is ample evidence to indicate that children and youth in are not active enough and are making poor health choices. The key to addressing this issue and making the world a healthier place is teaching our children and youth healthy habits and providing them with the skills necessary to make positive decisions now and throughout their lives.
In order for students to develop the comprehension, commitment and capacity to lead and promote healthy active lives, the implementation of mandatory Health education from Grades 1-12 would provide further opportunities for instruction by a specialist who would teach and assess a curriculum that has an intentional scope and sequence. Increasing exposure of students to the philosophy and learning outcomes of the revised Health education curriculum has many benefits, including: increased student engagement, increased readiness for learning, increased concentration and productivity, increased ability to cope with stress, decreased absenteeism, improved morale, increased academic achievement, and the development of skills to support safe and healthy relationships, lead healthy active lives and be socially engaged and responsible citizens of the future.
Over the past few generations, the rapid growth of transportation and technology has allowed access to previously isolated parts of the world. Enhanced communication is facilitating greater exposure to issues of resource scarcity, especially in the third world. This knowledge has sparked growing humanitarianism and a willingness to help, especially among younger generations. The growing recognition of effects of pollution and environmental degradation, most significantly by industrialized nations, has ignited a new drive toward sustainability and responsible resource utilization. In this new era of focus on equity and sustainability, global health education and training programs are growing in number and influence.
Medical schools and residency programs have been struggling to keep up with the global health demands of medical students and residents. Although the number of international programs has been growing steadily over the last several decades, many schools and programs have not had the necessary tools to develop adequate training programs in global health education. Studies of United States-based PAs show that consistent interest in global health work among PA students.
