Hearing Center - Proposed Tax Credit For Equipment
Not every person who visits a hearing center has the ability to pay for the equipment that he or she may need
. Some households struggle with the cost of aids for their children or other members of the family. In order to combat this issue, legislation has been introduced in both the House of Representatives and the Senate that involves a tax credit for certain people. Both bills have slight variations but serve the purpose of bringing assistance to those with a need to improve their ability to hear.
Details Of The Legislation
The goal of both pieces of legislation centers on providing people with a tax credit for purchases made at a hearing center, including aids. There is nothing in place now that helps a person defer the cost outside of personal health insurance. The credit would be for $500 per aid and up to $1000 per person available once every five years. It is assumed that the equipment can be adjusted to any changes in a person's ability to hear during that time, therefore only one piece of equipment is needed during that time.
In the House, the tax credit would apply to a person over the age of 55 and also to any individual purchasing equipment for a dependent. It does however exclude people with an income over $200,000. The Senate bill offers the same credit, however it is available to a person of any age. At this point, these aids are not covered by Medicare and are not part of many states' mandated benefits. Right now, a person may be able to go in for a hearing center assessment, but he or she may not be able to afford the necessary solution.
Why It Is Important?
One of the most important sections of the population that will benefit from this legislation is the youth. The estimated cost for children that do not receive the right treatment or equipment at a hearing center is extensive. Early intervention can make a huge difference in the life of a child and save time, money and effort in the education process. Imagine how hard it is to learn new concepts when it is difficult to understand the person doing all of the explaining.
Most people do not realize the extent to which being able to hear can affect a person's life. At work, being able to hear directions and enter into conversations is a must. Without the right equipment, some people struggle to make their way through the workday, and the frustration can be intense when there is a lack of understanding. In the same way, a person's home life can be affected when he or she can't understand conversations or appears to be disinterested, lacking the ability to hear the other person talking. This tax credit will change the lives of many people if passed.
