, no matter if you were born just yesterday or not. Ordinarily people start to notice more and more their hearing loss after they start to hear less and less. It should also be noted that permanent loss of hearing is also possible and depends on the gravity of the situation.

Hearing problems can be symptons of something else that may be less serious or more serious, therefore the most logical thing to do is getting yourself to see a doctor. Pinpointing the area of damage or of concern with regards to the hearing disorder is the initial step when undergoing a checkup. After defining what the problem is can a suitable hearing treatment be used to treat the person affected.

When talking about hearing loss, a person may have a different kind of hearing disorder from the next. The affected area in the hearing pathway will determine what form of hearing disorder a subject has. Some types of hearing loss are more serious than others, and some are easily treated while others may be more complex.

One common hearing loss problem is conductive loss of hearing and this is characterized by a problem of the outer and middle ear transmitting sound to the inner ear. Any failures along the hearing pathway, including the ear canal, the outer and middle ear parts, the tiny bones, all fall under the conductive hearing disorder. A person who has this type of disorder can be considered lucky in a way, as this is the easiest to treat or manage with hearing aids.

A hearing disorder that is complex, most of the time untreatable and is the exact opposite of conductive hearing loss is called sensorineural hearing loss. Any disfunctions within the inner ear, the cochlea, nerves, hair cells and even abnormalities within the brain with regards to processing audio are under sensorineural. The cochlea is very important, as it is the part of the ear that holds nerves and hair hearing cells that processes sounds.

When not the ear, but the central nervous system is affecting a person's hearing then this is called central hearing loss. If you are afflicted with this type of hearing problem, chances are you can hear perfectly well, but have a hard time focusing and understanding speech and different sounds. The best and only available treatment for this kind of problem is by controlling the environment and making sure there is as little noise as possible.

Beyond physical problems affecting hearing, a person's hearing can also be affected by psychological disorders, emotional disorders and this is called functional hearing loss. A person can have perfect hearing but will not respond to sound or speech or anything. The problem with this, is actually diagnosing the condition correctly and not mistaking it from some other one.

When you have both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss together in an ear, then this person has what is called mixed hearing loss. The conductive hearing problem can be treated easily in mixed hearing loss. But the problem with sensorineural loss is most likely permanent for now, until new advances in medicinal technology can find a cure for it.

As said, hearing loss is a very big issue as it really can affect anyone at any time and it can literally change a person's lifestyle. Even though technology is moving at break neck speeds, there still isn't any sign of an effective treatment let alone a cure. The only way to keep yourself healthy, not just the ears, is to have regular checkups.
