Help Your Child Succeed With A Special Education Advocate
Do you get frustrated because your child has special needs and you aren't sure how to get the school to do what is necessary
? You know that your child has great potential, but you can't seem to get the help you need in order to tap into it. Is it the fault of the Missouri special education system or just your inability to understand the system? Maybe it is time to get some professional help so you don't have to go through this battle alone.
No two children are alike. Sure, there are similarities and general tendencies, but in a classroom, a teacher is asked to cater to the requirements of a room full of individual needs. How can you ensure that your child gets the attention they deserve when competing with over 25 other students at the same time? Some teachers have artfully mastered this technique, but others are struggling to keep their head above water with all that is asked of them. Your principal or professional advocate may ask you to sit in on the class and determine potential solutions.
From California to Kansas, special education programs include some form of IEP or Individualized Education Plan. Maybe all that is needed is for your child to sit closer to the front of the class so they can see and focus better. Maybe they need to be removed from class from time to time in order to receive more one on one attention or have tests administered verbally. You are probably already aware of many of these needs; make sure the student, teacher and school are as well so that appropriate attention is being given. Depending upon the situation, other students may be able to help out and learn important social skills as well as taking some of the pressure off of the teacher.
It may pay to do a little research before attending a special education meeting. Don't be afraid to ask for definitions and don't be too quick to be offended. If the principal keeps talking about your student needing an APE, it doesn't mean they are a monkey's uncle. Adapted Physical Education is just one of the many terms that are made into acronyms that are unfamiliar to those new to the special education scene. Another common term you will hear is LRE: Least Restrictive Environment. Hopefully the educators can curb the jargon and speak in plain English, but it could pay to do a little research beforehand or write down terms you don't understand so you can learn more about them after the meeting.
Overall, the most important thing is for your child to be well cared for and have their needs met. Know your rights and be willing to take advantage of them, but also be aware of reality and what constitutes a realistic request.
