High Density High Strength Isotropic Graphite

Recently I visited CSIR Technofest 2010 showcased by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair in New Delhi, the Capital of India. In this technofest, I have seen a technology " High Density High Strength Isotropic Graphite" which was developed by NPL (National Physical Laboratory), New Delhi under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi, India.

Natural Graphite

Natural graphite is a result of metamorphism of carbon-rich organic matter. Basic properties of graphite are a good thermal conductivity and electrical equipment, low coefficient of thermal expansion, high chemical and thermal resistance, excellent lubricating properties.

Isotropic graphite

Isotropic graphite is having high bending strength and compressive strength. NPL has developed this High Density High Strength Isotropic Graphite. It is high quality isotropic graphite with high density, high strength, high degree of isotropy and fine micro structure.

This graphite is having the utility and advantages for electrodes for Electric Discharge Machines (EDM). EDM is a modern technique of performance precision tools and models in hard and difficult to melt materials. It is also used for Heaters, Crucibles, Seals & Bearings, Nuclear graphite, Rocket nozzles and Moulds for continuous casting of metals and alloys etc

Bulk density 1.8 1.9 gcm-3

Bending strength : 700-1000 kgcm-2

Compress strength: 1500-2000 kgcm-2

Electrical resistivity: 1.2-1.6 m ohm -cm

Shore hardness: 70-80
