History Of A Continent, History Of The Proud Europeans

Then and now, the many countries of Europe are on the forefront of trade and commerce

, media and entertainment, politics and government, education, sports and culture.

Indeed, tourists to Europe will take months of travel to enjoy the essence of the continent. Each country has its own distinct history, culture and society that deserve at least one, or possibly two, visits in a lifetime. Before visiting, make sure that reservations for good accommodations in a holiday apartment have been made preferably through an online reservation site.

The history of Europe can be divided into many distinct eras starting with the prehistoric era. The remains of hominids dating back to 1 million years have been found in Spain, thus, the long history of inhabitation in the continent. Neanderthal Man appeared in the continent 150,000 years ago, followed by the Cro-Magnon Man's appearance about 40,000 years ago.

The Neolithic period when these modern men appeared was characterized by extensive crop cultivation, livestock husbandry, widespread use of pottery and increased number of towns and cities. It was then followed by the Iron Age starting at approximately 800 BC.

The classical antiquity period had a profound impact on the development of countries inside and outside Europe. Among the achievements from this period is the creation of the polis (city-state) in Greece in addition to the many architectural, cultural, social and political ideals that have influenced modern-day society itself. Also from this period was the Roman Empire, which has great impact on contemporary law, politics, language, culture, engineering, architecture and government.

The Middle Ages in Europe saw the decline of many cultures as well as the migration of peoples across borders to find greener pastures abroad. Certain centuries were called the Dark Ages of Europe by many historians because of the stagnation of societies in the continent, which was brought by events like the Great Famine of 1315-1317 and the Black Plague, although empires also flourished during this period.

And then came the Renaissance Period, a period of great cultural change that started in Florence and spread to the rest of Europe. Geniuses like Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci became famous at this time for their masterpieces. The Medici family dominated the banking sector.

The 18th and 19th centuries were considered as the Age of Enlightenment. Empires, republics and governments rose and fell and rose again. The Industrial Revolution greatly impacted on many countries and societies. Civil wars and world wars have been fought, lost and won.

In the 21st century, Europe is once again poised to become a dominant force in the world stage, thanks to the European Union. But it is a domination that the world will welcome because of its positive impact on humanity.
