Home Business Productivity Tip - Progress chart

Somebody once said, "If it's not measured, it's not managed." In my experience as a home business owner I realized that many people quit mainly because the results did not match their expectations. But when I used to point out to my team that it's because of their lack of consistent action, they never used to accept it. I used to blame them for their lack of responsibility. However, experience taught me that if you can't measure what you are doing, there is no way you can correct it.

For example: I had planned to exercise regularly and started off well. After a week, I started listening to the thief on my shoulder who was after my promise. After a few days, I never used to wake up on time. And before I knew it I had completely stopped exercising. This is not the first time this has happened to me. You may have heard that in order for anything to become a habit, you have to do it consistently for 21 days. I later realized that if I can tract my progress across the length of 21 days, I would be in a better position to understand my habit patterns.

That's when I created a progress chart as part of my personal productivity program. I purchased a white board for this purpose and drew rows and columns on it. I wrote down all the actions that I needed to take on a daily basis in the rows. In the columns, I wrote the day of the month. Everyday before retiring for the night, I mark the cells corresponding with the day of the month and the action. For example: If I exercised on the 24th of June, then I will check that particular cell. If not, then I leave it blank.

As each day progresses, I get to see which area I am lacking in and which ones I am strong in. This helps me take corrective action when I go off course. After I implemented this personal productivity tracking system, I have become much more consistent with my daily actions. I highly recommend that you follow this for your own benefit. If you don't have a white board, you can always prepare one on paper or on any spreadsheet app. I prefer whiteboard, because it stares right on your face and acts as a good reminder. If it's worked for an inconsistent person like me, I am sure it will for anybody.

God bless.
