Do I need this piece of fitness equipment?
First things first, buying a piece of equipment is never a guarantee that you'll actually use it. This being the case, one of the first things to examine is your fitness goals.
Are you looking to lose tummy fat?
Would you like to get bigger biceps or add muscle mass?
Do you enjoy running or biking?
What piece of equipment you start with hinges on how you answer questions like the ones above. If adding muscle mass is important, it might be wise to skip the treadmill and opt for a set of adjustable dumbbells, or a bench and a barbell weight set.

One mistake that is easy to make is that if you buy something expensive, you'll be more likely to use it. This couldn't be further from the truth. Sure you may use it more in the beginning, but soon after the newness wears off, you'll be left with an expensive clothes rack.

Definitely plan ahead and avoid the hassle.
Is it safe for you?
Always make sure you check with your doctor before you start a fitness program. Also make sure the piece of equipment you're interested in is safe for you, so make sure you try it before you buy it.
Sit in it at the store and see if it's uncomfortable in any way. Or better yet, if there is a gym near you that has the piece of equipment you're interested in, get a pass for the day to the gym and try it out.
Never make an impulse buy on fitness equipment. Make sure you research thoroughly before you buy so you get the piece of fitness equipment that fits your needs best.
