Home Power Generators - The Basics of Homemade Electricity
Never before in the history of man have we become more dependent on electricity than we are now.
For example, having instant access to the internet has become such a deep part of our daily routines. Just have the electric go off while the kids are on facebook and you would think the world came to a halt. But, mom and dad are probably just as addicted as the kids are and sometimes more so.
We have become so dependent on the big power companies for the juice that runs our home, the idea of making our own home generators for electricity seems a little far out.
After all, how could the average man on the street possibly have the knowledge and understanding to be able to create electricity in their very own home? Now, exactly how does this energy get created in the first place? First thing is to understand that electricity is created as a by product of other forms of energy. Take the Hoover Dam which takes the energy of moving water to turn the large turbines of its generators, and creates electricity. But of course, we need a source of energy a little smaller than the Colorado River to be able to make a home generator.
One of the most available sources of electricity is the Sun.
Most people have seen the sun used by their neighbors in the form of solar panels on the roof of their houses. Just like a solar powered calculator gathers enough power from the light in a room to run itself, so does the solar panel, but on a slightly larger scale. Even though it produces larger amounts of power than a calculator, it still uses the same principles. However, the larger the amount of juice needed the more expensive the solar panels are. And this expense is the biggest problem with solar unless you have deep pockets and can justify the expense with the long term savings.
Another popular generator of electricity is the windmill.
After all, the wind is a powerful form of energy. Just look at tornadoes and hurricanes and the massive damage they can cause. This massive energy is typically in a more controlled light wind turning the blades of the windmill. As the blades turn, they turn the generator causing power to be generated. The trick is to be able to find a location to place this machine that well allow it to gather efficient amounts of constant wind to produce the desired amounts of electricity. It is true that wind power is more efficient than solar, but it is also true that it can be much harder to sustain its production when the wind has gone away.
I guess there is pros and cons for both these methods, especially since they both depend on mother nature to provide the needed sun light and wind. The only way we know how to store either power source is to charge up a battery of some sort to kick in when there is no sun or wind. For the average person to be able to generate their own power, they need to do a little homework first. But, the information exists today that will allow you to become energy independent. Just use common sense when you are implementing any of the methods you are trying and keep safety first.
