Home Security Steps for Small Living Spaces

Most people imagine burglars as devious criminals, who dress in stocking hats and dark clothing to avoid being spotted during a night-time house invasion. Generally people believe that the biggest houses tend to be the targets, places with expansive lawns and lots of expensive possessions inside. Yet burglars frequently work on a small-scale. Here are some steps for apartments and duplexes that will help increase home security.

1) Determine the Perimeter and Entry Points. If you live in an apartment building, you might think that the only way into your place is via the main door that you use on a daily basis. However, many apartment buildings are not massive skyscrapers and home security can be compromised from the outside. If you are on a lower floor, burglars may be able to enter with the help of vegetation or a nearby tree. Ledges and angled rooftops can also allow criminals to make it into your apartment, even if you are on a floor higher up. Take a minute to evaluate the entryways and install metal bars or window latches to prevent entry.

2) Prevent Unwanted Entry through the Main Door. Always be sure that the buzzer or entry system that is installed in your building is working correctly. Check to see who is at the door before buzzing anyone up to your place. When they get to the door of your apartment, check again through a peephole. Some people still use chains that prevent a door from fully opening, but these options can put you at risk as they are easier for criminals to breakthrough. You should also have a sturdy deadbolt installed on your door, so that you can rest better at night.

3) Talk to Your Landlord. Unless you are the owner of your apartment, there are some decisions that must be discussed with the landlord. Protecting your apartment is in the best interests of any landlord, but they might not make preventative action a priority. Therefore, when you need work done, such as repairing the buzzer or the installation of bars on one of the windows, make it a point to find time to thoroughly discuss home security with the landlord. Most owners are reasonable people and will also consent to making your place safer if it is a good long-term investment.

4) Install a Home Alarm System. While some apartments may not need individual warning signals, many of them do. This is especially true if you live in an apartment with more than one entrance or located on a lower level. Discuss the matter with the landlord, preferably prior to moving in.

5) Know your Neighbors in the Building. From the moment you move into a new location, it makes sense to get to know the faces of the people you will be seeing on a daily basis. Introduce yourself and get to feel comfortable talking to them. Establishing a relationship with the people who live near you will help you take any additional steps towards increased home security that may be needed. It will also prevent suspicious phone calls and false alarms, as you will know who should be in your building and who does not belong.
