Home Security and Your Garage
Of all the spaces in the home, the garage is that which is paid the least attention
. Filled with tools, sports equipment, boxes and more, theres hardly even space to put the car sometimes. Considered an area of work and not play and of utility and not esthetics, the garage is a place where a minimal amount of time and energy is spent.
Nevertheless, as with all spaces in the house, it does require a certain amount of attention this is true even when it comes to home security, a topic that may not at first come to mind when thinking of the garage. Home security is vital in every single part of the home, including the ugly ones.
Therefore, take a few cues here and make sure you deal with the security and safety issues regarding your garage today.
1. Close Up
Avoid leaving garage doors open as much as possible. This is especially important if your garage is attached to your house. As many of us dont lock the door between the garage and our homes, leaving the doors open provides intruders with a too-easy point of access to break and enter. Force yourself to remember to close the garage when you leave your home or go to sleep at night. Write yourself notes, do double checks, make a routine, etc. Do whatever you need to make sure you close up.
2. Lock Down
If there is a door connecting your home to your garage, lock it. Though you close your garage doors, the spaces are often quite easy to get into regardless. Therefore, when you enter and exit your home, lock the garage door behind you.
3. Change Codes
If your garage door opens with a code, change it up every once in a while. You should do the same with your home alarm system, too. That way, if youve let the code slip a few times (to neighbors, acquaintances visiting, etc.), you wont have to worry about it being used to get into your home.
4. Note Dangers
Of all of the spaces in the home, the garage can be one of the most dangerous. Filled with tools, equipment and other potentially harmful objects, the garage can prove a recipe for disaster especially when small children are involved. Therefore, try your best to keep all potentially dangerous things out of the way and out of reach. Lock toolboxes and put lawn equipment in areas that are out of reach. Hunting gear should be stored and locked up. Whenever possible, children should be discouraged from playing in the garage area.
5. Clean Up
Much in line with the idea of paying attention to dangerous objects, you should also pay attention to potentially dangerous substances in the garage area. Gas and oil leaks could prove huge fire hazards. And old insulation could be a breeding ground not only for insects but also for asbestos. Make an effort to keep your garage clean, and youll improve your home security as well.
