Honda To Launch A New Diesel Engine By 2012

Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI), the Indian unit of Japan based leading car maker Honda Motors

, stated on Thursday it will be introducing a less then 2.0 L capacity diesel engine in the world market. The new diesel engine is expected to be introduced in the Indian market after its launch in the European market in year 2012. It is to be mentioned here that the company doesn't sell a diesel version of any of its cars in the Indian market as all of its India portfolio vehicles are available in only petrol version only. The launch of diesel version of its cars in the country will not only strengthen its base in the Indian market but also enable its cars to compete more promptly with rival cars in their respective segments.

According to a statement given by a senior official of the company to a leading business news daily in the country, the small diesel engine will be ready for European models by 2012. We're thinking of bringing this to India after that, though with modifications. He also added that it is likely to be used in cars below the Accord and CR-V, like the City, Honda Jazz and the new small car.

Globally, the company has only one diesel engine in its portfolio - a 2.2 L power-trains that has been used in its popular luxury vehicles including Honda Accord and CR-V. The Honda model has a lower hand against the vehicles of the other auto biggies, because of the lack of diesel versions.

Speaking on the sidelines of the SIAM annual conference, the company official said that the company had earlier planned to open the Tapukara plant at the end of 2009, so the basic building structure is already there. He added that however, now the company will only start making cars at Tapukara when the capacity at Greater Noida is exhausted. Right now, it is using only 60 per cent of its total capacity there.
