Growing up in the '70s and '80s, I can't tell you how many times we were promised
that all of our problems would be solved "by the year 2000." The year 2000 has come and gone, and we find ourselves in as big a mess, economically, socially and spiritually, as ever.
Not for lack of technological progress: Science has enabled us but clearly has not saved us.
"From Paris in the Twentieth Century," it is clear Jules Verne realized, in spite of his celebrated optimism, that science would never save mankind, and such hope would be sadly misplaced. Science is an incredibly useful tool, but we need to understand its limitations.
It is a powerful tool that enables: We can clear forests and move earth. We can fly into outer space and peruse the depths of the oceans. We can build and destroy. The one thing science cannot do is tell us right from wrong. It cannot guide.
The precious asset we call hope needs to placed in something

So how do we start this fantastic journey of hope? We begin by seeking. Matthew 7:7 says, "Seek and you will find."
The first part of seeking is figuring out where you are. If you don't know where you are, you will never get where you are going.
Once a ship has determined its position, the second thing it needs is a bearing or direction. This is where hope comes in. Hope is not only the destination; it is also how you get there. There are properties to look for

Hope should give your life direction. If you have your bearings confused, you may very well end up doing more harm than good.
Hope in something that is bigger than you are. If you hope in yourself, then you are going to be limited to only what you know and only what you can do.
Hope should transform your life and make you a better person. Does it empower you to overcome your vices? Your pride, your avarice, your hate?
Hope should have rejuvenating power. Is every morning new? Do you hop out of bed with a spring in your step regardless of your circumstances? OK, so no one is going to be like Mary Poppins every morning, but hope should have a rejuvenating effect in your life on a daily basis.
Hope is something imperishable. Obviously, there is a problem if hope is entrusted to something perishable, as when it fades, rusts, melts, molds or implodes, hope will perish along with it.
The 21st century promises to be an age of technological wizardry a generation or two beyond what even Jules Verne could have imagined. We have electronic gadgets that amaze, delight and constantly entertain. Man is sure to become enabled like never before.
As we boldly go into the future, there is much to be optimistic about. Hope will make the journey fantastic
