House Mold & Its Effects On People
Mold and the spores it produces can create serious health issues in people and pets
. Mold prevention can eliminate much of the problem, but caution should be used in areas where humidity, flooding and dampness are a constant factor in homes. The various kinds of mold effect people in different ways, especially those with weakened immune systems and respiratory conditions, and contact with mold should be avoided.
Mold:
According to the CDC, molds can be found inside and outdoors. They are a fungus and it is not known how many species of mold exist, but can be estimated at up to 300,000 plus, according to the CDC. Humidity, dampness and warmth are factors in mold growth and spread, speeding the process of reproduction of mold spores, which are moved about a home through the duct work and heat vents. Mold spores, unlike mold itself, can survive dry and harsh conditions.
Types:
Three groups of molds affect humans and pets in different ways. Allergenic molds generally have an effect on those who are allergic to molds or those with asthma. Pathogenic molds result in infections and can have harsh effects on the immune system, especially those with already-suppressed immune systems. The third, oxygenic molds can result in serious health problems for anyone. These molds can result in cancer and other radical illnesses and conditions.
Effects:
Some of the health problems experienced from living with mold in the home, aside from the common allergy to mold, include respiratory problems and cough, breath shortage, fatigue, cancers, immune problems, gastric illness, asthma, bloody sputum in children and the elderly and reproductive effects, according to Dr. James Li at the Mayo Clinic. These can increase if mold is not cleared out in a recommended fashion. Improper cleanup can result in spreading the mold and encouraging faster production of spores.
Prevention:
The only way to control mold in a home is to eliminate the environments that encourage mold growth. Clean up damp areas, dry out wet basements as quickly as possible, exhaust steam from cooking and showers use a dehumidifier and clean areas that hold moisture in the home. Particular areas of concern are basements, bathrooms and dark humid spaces. Wipe down surfaces with bleach and dry thoroughly to prevent mold spores. Flood zones have increased mold problems.
Cautions:
Contact with mold should be avoided when cleaning. Use a face mask and rubber gloves when wiping down mold surfaces as mold spores can affect the body via the skin. Avoid installing carpeting in damp areas as this traps moisture beneath the rug and can increase mold spore production. Be aware of smells that may indicate mold is present but not visible. Clean water spills, leaks and repair drips as quickly as possible.
