Firstly, if you are reading this you are clearly motivated to house training your puppy so congratulations for taking that first step
. You may have considered professional advice but why go for that before you've tried a solution thats free and effective??
The training of a puppy is not as difficult as you may think but it does require concentration and dedication from your part as the dog owner so please don't think its an instant cure. As the owner you can evaluate your puppys response better than anyone and can adapt quickly, which is great - plus having the puppy's respect from the off puts you in great stead for the future, right?
Dogs are pack animals and operate in a hierachical structure in the wild. This is no different for them in the home environment - so they would see your house's social structure as a hierachy and try and place themselves at the top as "alpha male(or dog)". If a dog sees himself as above you he will act like the alpha male and mistreat you and your home. It is imperative that you act the dominant role and disply alpha male tendencies. A dog will pick up on this and not threaten your status if done correctly.
Command training is the most plausible step to groom the dog. Each command must be specific and understandable for the dog to comprehend. Dogs do not respond positively to physical abuse and over harsh tones. The dog may fail to understand it and be unable to work as well. A dog is likely to become demoralised in this case, which will not help matters. It is important to keep its spirit high with encouragement and treats or it will fail to comply with commands.
When the dog has become competent at this level you can consider progressing onto reward training.
