, and more importantly money, ceases to be an issue. However, when Christmas has come and gone and you're faced with another mountain bike and even less room to store it than last year, the most practical solution can be the least expected.

The humble shed has been adding valuable space to houses in Manchester for hundreds of years. Initially used as somewhere to store coal, fire wood and sometimes even pigeons, they have undergone a transformation in the last thirty years as more people realise the value of extra space.

Modern sheds have changed a lot from the run down outhouses that once punctuated the Mancunian skyline. Designs available today include greenhouse/ shed hybrids, large spaces with tall windows and entrances porches and are so comfortable they are occasionally converted into bedrooms. They are even available in wood, metal or plastic to suit different households and gardens.

Depending on what you have in mind, there are a range of options. For storage, vertical units, shelves and hooks are great at saving space. If the space is to be used as a home office to beat city centre rates or a study to give teenage children somewhere to revise, book cases and folding chairs will clear floor space. Depending on the size of the shed it could be used as a second lounge with bean bags and even a sky light.

Making memories with children while they are young is nice, but sharing a hobby provides valuable bonding time. It teaches children the value of hard work and can also teach them valuable skills that will come in useful throughout life. So if your son is already collecting corrugated iron and old cupboard doors, he might be trying to ask you something.
