How Addictions Hurt Relationships

Addictions can definitely hurt relationships!

I have been a youth minister for some time and I realized the unwanted effect of addictions to the relationship of the addicted person. Whatever kind of abuse it is (drugs, alcohol, computer, video games, etc), the person can eventually neglect the people around him/her and person becomes a burden to his/her relationships.

When a person is in addiction, he/she can easily exhibit frequent mood swings, lies, secrecy and very bad money management. All of these signs are very stressful to the spouse or even children. In some other cases, violent outbursts are also prevalent and this is not only stressful to others but it is also harmful, especially to the children. In relation to this, it is common to hear an addicted father hurting his children while being overdriven by the need of drugs. There are also cases of alcoholic father who beats his wife without any valid reason. Interestingly, most of these fathers are not violent in nature and they surely love their wife and children; however, because of their addiction, their relationships suffer.

The above situations can easily lead into broken marriages. The wife suffers especially with regards to financial stability, especially if she depends on the father for financial provisions. On the other hand, the children suffer greatly because they are left with a broken family and a confusing situation in an early stage of life. The person who is addicted also suffers because he loose people who can be his best support in trying to recover in his addiction. Eventually, he is left alone, trying to cope up with his own problem which is not easy.

Relationships are vital in trying to recover from any kind of addiction. They can be great support in any endeavor to cope up from addiction. There are good programs on how to assist an addicted person. Concern, love and care are very important in this process. A person who wants to recover from the mental illness that gripped him needs people that will believe and help him carry the burden. Before it is too late for your relationship, if someone close to you is entangled in addiction, why don't you check the Addiction Free Forever, a Program designed to permanently end an Alcohol or Drug Problem.
