How Ageing Affects Hair Loss

Hair loss is a natural process occurring to our body as part of our life cycle

. In fact, the hair has a separate life cycle. They are the growing phase, resting phase and the shedding phase. The growing phase lasts for 2-6 years and then rests for about 3 months. After that it sheds off. New hair is replaced in its place.

Normally around 50-150 hair sheds off per day. They are replaced by new hairs. But as your age goes up, hair loss increases, hair re-growth process slows down, and eventually it stops.

There are certain methods by which you can partially circumvent the hair loss. For that you need to know about the complete life cycle of the hair. Hair grows inside the follicles which consist of proteins and living tissues. A hair strand stays inside the follicles for a time period of 2-6 years, and after that they fall out. New hair is now replaced in the vacant follicle.

As your age goes up, the overall regenerative ability of the body slows down, due to the less absorption of protein and their synthesis. The replenishing property of the hair follicle also slows down. Thus your hair falls out and it is regenerated slowly or in certain case it fails. It is often accompanied by baldness or thinning of the hair. Thus the overall loss of hair is very much greater than the rate at which it is regenerated.

Usually men lose more hair than women as they age. Men tend to lose their hair from the front and it gradually proceeds backward. This is due to the interaction between protein and the pigments of the body. The formation of DHT from testosterone makes the pigments and protein act in such a way so that less hair is grown. For women hair loss is less compared to men, but hair thinning is seen with them. This is due to the insufficient production of pigments.

By consuming high protein diet and proper protein supplements, you can reduce the rate of hair loss.
