Two, it's a form of permission based marketing; generally speaking, people sign up to your newsletters or email campaigns and so to some extent they're already aware of your service and have some interest. An effective email containing a promotion or convincing copy can be effective in converting that interest into a sale. Even without an instant conversion, as long as what you're sending them is of interest you'll still be building customer engagement with your brand and keeping a small step ahead of the competition in visibility.

Three, unlike direct mail it can provide an instant link to your brand's website - and if your business has an online commerce section, it can even link to an instant sale. Many companies use their newsletters to showcase limited offers or even to send out promotional codes and other benefits to their subscribers.

Fourth - and finally - it provides an effective means of judging how effective your marketing campaign is. Software exists that can help you track all aspects of an email marketing campaign, from the number of 'bounces' (mail rejected by users), what kind of 'bounce' took place (reader or junk-filters), how long people viewed your messages and which embedded links gained the most attention.
