Many have wondered about this policy, but the need for it actually stems from those who are reselling items of a specific brand. According to Google, before this, these companies would not have been allowed to use that brand name without express consent of the actual maker of it.
You Tube was another company that made changes in the last year (not just Google). YouTube has added videos so that anyone can promote and use them on the website. Web advertisements have made them a serious amount of money and it seems to keep growing from there.
in 2009 a bigger thing happened that not a lot of people saw coming. Bing and Yahoo teamed up. Although it didn't happen for sure until December, it was done to make things easier for people and really helped both of them get to the top. It also brought on a little bit of competition for Google.
