How Best To Plan Out Garden Landscaping

There are a many different ways to add structure and form to an outdoor space

, and decorative aggregates can provide a cheap and easy way to do this while making the space low on maintenance by adding it as a decorative feature. There is a spectrum of different materials, sizes and colours to choose from, including glass aggregates which can provide a modern alternative to garden gravel, slate chippings and many other forms of aggregate which come in a range of different hues including blue and plum. Aggregates are excellent for use in a variety of different outdoor spaces such as a patio or a gravel driveway.

One of the most common uses of decorative stone and chippingsis in a gravel driveway. Here you should take care that the aggregates used are laid to around double the depth of the aggregate itself. Larger aggregates such as slate chippings are ideal for use in this instance, particularly as slate tends to interlock underfoot in a way that conventional gravel does not but if you are still looking for that classic gravel drive look, then larger forms of stone chippings are also suitable.

When planning out garden landscaping, there are many different areas where decorative stone and chippings can be used. A common use is on patios, as garden gravel, slate chippings and other aggregatescan offer a non-slip alternative to decking. Elsewhere, decorative aggregates can be used to add interest to an outdoor space by creating pathways and areas; particularly useful if there is a large expanse of grass which by itself looks rather plain and requires a great deal of maintenance.

Water features can also be added to by using decorative stone and chippings; however it is important to know what materials could cause an imbalance in the PH of the water. Sandstone, marble and slate are generally considered safe for use with aquatics. It is not advisable to use limestone as this can adversely affect pond life and fish. It is also advisable to rinse all aggregates prior to use in tanks or ponds, as stone can grind up in transit creating dust in the packaging which can then be transferred to the water. Larger aggregates are great for use in garden landscaping; boulders and slate are often used to add drama to a water feature such as a pond or a mini waterfall.

When considering the packaging and delivery of your aggregates, take into account practicalities, such as how the materials will be transferred to the location and how they will be laid. For example, a tipper vehicle might be more suitable for a large area such as a driveway, or to cover another large area, for example if wood chippings are to be laid as protective flooring in a childrens play area.
