How Big Should New Bedrooms Be?

When designing a newly built home or planning for a major renovation the optimum room size is a common question. How much space will your family actually need in each area of the house? Always try to eliminate wasted space but be sure to include enough room to live comfortably. The size of new bedrooms is almost entirely dependent on who will sleep there.

New Bedrooms for Kids

Kid's bedrooms are traditionally the smallest in the house, although you may want to reconsider following that trend. Think about what your child will use their bedroom for now and into the future. Consider whether added room would give them more flexibility and allow for their friends to enjoy the space as well.

Consider storage as well - will they have enough room for all of their stuff in a small room? Unless you have ultra clever storage options, kid's clothing, toys and entertainment equipment (video games, computers, playhouses, etc.) will spill into your living space if their bedroom is too small. Consider nine square metres to be the minimum size for your child's new bedroom (generally 3 metres by 3 metres works well).

New Bedrooms for Couples

Often couples dream of a sprawling master bedroom suite with a sitting room, a walk in closet and a beautiful master en suite. Although there is nothing wrong with having these dreams, be sure that is what you want for life when designing this space for your home. Many times a large master bedroom is a haven for young parents, a space where they can relax and unwind in privacy. But as the kids grow the extra space in the bedroom may seem wasted and it is difficult to convert it later on.

Including a large closet and an en suite is wise. The bedroom itself should be large enough for your furniture and space to move around comfortably. Measure the bedroom furniture you would like to own (even if you don't right now) and design for a small sitting area and large windows.

New Guest Bedrooms

These rooms can be designed in almost any size, since they can also be used for almost any purpose. Try incorporating a guest bedroom together with a study or home office. Think about whether a guest bedroom could be used in some other way when there aren't any guests and design for that amount of space.

If you can't see any need for another use and this will strictly be a guest room, you can go even smaller than a typical child's room. Just be sure there is space for a bed, chest of drawers, small nightstand and possible a chair. Keep the windows large for natural light and be sure to decorate with neutral furnishings.
