How Body Shape Can Determine The Best Bridesmaid Dresses

One of the most important parts of wedding planning is selecting your bridesmaid dresses

. Each woman has a different body shape, and the bridesmaid dresses chosen for each should accentuate their features. Apart from tall, full figured or petite women, there are also those who have hourglass, apple, pear or rectangle shapes.

If you want to make sure that each bridesmaid looks her best, then they should each be able to express their own personal style and wear dresses that complement their individual shapes. Keep reading for some helpful tips on which bridesmaid dresses are best for specific body shapes.

The Apple Shape

The apple shape has a larger torso and a smaller lower body. These women tend to appear heavier above the waistline, but have slim arms and legs. This means they have the opportunity to show off their legs while placing less emphasis on their waists.

The apple shape could also be referred as full figured, and when it comes to choosing a bridesmaid dress, a few embellishments such as a ruffle can help create a slim look.

It is best to stay away from two tone dresses as they tend to shorten the overall silhouette. Halter styles or A-line tops with skirts cut on the bias can be very slimming. V-Necks and wrap tops can also make the waist look smaller, while empire cuts draw attention away from the midsection. If a bridesmaid has a noticeably full waist, try using a dark colored sash to make it look narrower.

The Pear Shape

The pear shape has large hips, thighs and legs, but a small upper body. Dresses that flatter this body type draw attention to the torso and away from the lower half. Bridesmaids dressed that are textured, or those with wide necklines are ideal for the pear shape. Pear shaped bridesmaids should choose halter necks as they can broaden the shoulders, which will create the illusion of smaller hips.

Skirts should be A-line or slightly flared, gathered or pleated in both the front and the back to complement fuller hips. A slight cinching of the waist will complete the look.

The Hourglass Shape

The hourglass has the much coveted curvy shape with a highly defined waist. Their shoulders, bust and hips are about the same size though. This shape is also characterized by a full buttocks and slender legs. Dresses that most flatter this body shape accentuate the natural waist while balancing the hips and thighs.

This shape lends itself well to soft and fitted garments and dresses that can be tailored to showcase the waist. V-neck, sweetheart or scooped necks are all complementary on the hourglass figure.

The Rectangle Shape

Rectangular shaped bodies tend to carry their weight evenly across the frame. For this reason, they have the most difficulty finding clothing that really fits. But a layered dress will create dimension and volume in all the right places. This body shape also works well with prints and detailed fabrics.

Rectangular shapes can be petite or tall, slender or broad. The key to dressing this shape is to create the illusion of a waistline. Being able to define a waist will give the overall impression of curves. Empire styles as well as wrap styles are good choices, while stiff fabrics should be avoided.

Tall or Petite

Tall women can break their length by adding a sash or some other detail at the hips or waist. This will also provide definition between top and bottom. It is possible for tall women to blend in to a wedding party without standing out. One tip is to fit the other bridesmaids with higher heels.

A petite bridesmaid needs a dress that will elongate her shape. Short or knee length skirts work well with a wrap or shawl to make the petite bridesmaids look taller. Floor length dresses are not recommended, but they can be pulled off if the bridesmaid wears high heels.

Its rare that your bridesmaids will all be the same height, weight and shape. So dont be afraid to mix up the cuts and styles of your bridal party dresses. Each dress should accentuate the individual bridesmaids best features and make her feel as comfortable as possible.

Knowing your bridesmaids body shapes is the first and most important step in finding beautiful bridal party dresses. Take the time to talk with your bridesmaids about what theyre looking for and what they feel most confident in. Remember, the more comfortable they are on the wedding day, the more fun theyll have. And happy bridesmaids make for wonderful memories and perfect wedding pictures.
