How Bodyweight Regulation Makes Dieting Complicated
When people set out to diet, they often look at their body and say, Man, I want to lose thirty pounds and look like that guy over there. I want to change my body permanently for one that is more muscular and slimmer. They then go on their diet, happily restricting the amount of calories they eat, doing exercise, and over time they lose weight and gain muscle until one day they sit up on say, Oh boy, I did it! Then, usually over the course of the next three months, they put all that weight back on and lose muscle. Why does this happen? The answer is bodyweight regulation, and in today's article I'm going to explain what's going on.
The simplest way to understand what your body is doing is to think of bodyweight regulation through a metaphor. A regulated system is one that seeks to maintain the status quo despite fluctuations in the environment; it's designed to resist change, and to stick to one set point. So imagine you're driving down the road at fifty miles an hour, and you engage cruise control. Your car speed is now a regulated system. So if you suddenly begin to accelerate to pass somebody before you, the car will respond when you take your foot off the gas by dropping back down to fifty.
If you break to take a turn, the car will then speed up to return to fifty. Either way, the car will respond to these changes by seeking to return to the status quo.
The same thing happens with your body. Your body has a set point at which it seeks to maintain itself, a level of weight, a ration of muscle to fat that it holds onto and will always strive to return to when given a chance. That means that when you diet you will lose weight, sure, but like when you press the break on your car, your engine will kick back in and seek to return to normal and put on weight when you relax.
This is what it means to have bodyweight regulation, and what your body's set point is is largely determined by genetics and luck. That's why some people seem able to remain looking good no matter what they do, and others spend their whole lives fighting and struggling to keep in shape and slender. It's not fair, but that's just the way it is.
