How Business Workwear Can Improve Company Image

No longer are suits confined to high-rise skyscrapers or stuffy lawyer firms they

are increasingly becoming the norm among smaller companies that want to demonstrate professionalism and a corporate attitude.

Previously, marketing and creative companies may have relied on the standard friendly uniform of jeans and a t-shirt; however there have been some major changes since then. A number of studies have been carried out that show that employees feel more proactive and ready to work in a suit than in their general casual wear it is believed that this is due to their being a clear line of distinction. This has caused an increase in the popularity of business workwear, as well as what is expected of a company.

Its easy to see why this would be true as numerous surveys show simply wearing workwear or suits helps to command authority and respect, particularly in the workplace. Though this may be partly down to a continued sense of snobbery (that those with more money can afford smarter clothes), it is clear that it is also down to the design and tailoring of the uniform.

Mens business suits are created to accent the shoulders and bring out the triangular shape of the torso; traditionally a sign of strength and authority, whilst the trousers emphasise the structure and stiffness of legs, also showing stability and steadfastness.

The suit can be traced back to the French royal court, the word suit actually coming from suite, meaning following as all components of the outfit complement each other in the same colour and material. It was picked up on by renowned British dandy, Beau Brummell, who adapted it to a simpler design and quickly popularised it in Britain.

The lounge suit (also known as the business suit) become fully popular in the early 20th century, during the Edwardian era and was beginning to be seen outside of the upper classes. Before 1935, a tight fit suit was the most widely-accepted; however after this date, there began a penchant for looseness.

As is the case with rotational trends in fashion in the 1970s, snug fitting jackets were once again favoured, until the 1980s when the opposite was popular. Now, in contemporary culture, there is much more of a divide, as there is no overriding style.

Slim suits are generally favoured by younger workers, thanks to their tailored fit that demonstrates the figure, whilst older businesspeople opt for comfort and design; however as ever, black remains the most popular colour.
