How Can I Best Prepare For Liposuction?

Liposuction (otherwise known as suction lipectomy or lipoplasty) has increased in popularity since about 1985, especially in the United States

. One important aspect that cannot be overlooked in investigating the surgical process is preparation. Without the proper preparation before surgery, patients could experience an elevated. Although lipectomy is incredibly popular, it is still a type of surgery and as such should be treated with the same level of preparation as any other surgical procedure.

One unexpected point in pre-lipoplasty preparation is the recommendation to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. Smoking apparently greatly increases the risk of complications during and after the procedure. Anticipate not smoking for several weeks after surgery as well. Along with not smoking, it is important to keep from drinking alcohol for a few days before and after the procedure

It is also important to avoid anti-inflammatory medications for around a week before the liposuction procedure. Asking your doctor about this will certainly help as he/she can provide a list of medications to avoid.

If your specific type of liposuction requires use of anesthesia, be sure not to eat anything about a day before the procedure. Eating and then going under an anesthetic is not good for the digestive system.

The morning before your liposuction, wear comfortable clothes that will be easy to slip in and out of before and after the surgery. Loose, comfortable clothes are convenient especially when dressing after surgery.

Other than being sure not to consumer certain substances that could delay the healing process or complicate the procedure and arranging everything for the morning of the surgery, it is important to ensure that everything is arranged for after the surgery. A ride to and from home should be arranged, supplies for the home-stay after surgery for the days or weeks of healing should also be set up. Making sure everything is set up before the procedure is vital because afterwards it may not be as easy due to the soreness that immediately follows and the anesthetic that might sometimes take a while to wear off.

There are, of course, plenty of other points in the process of preparation that are important to consider. The best thing to do is to visit a doctor in your area. Once you have decided to undergo liposuction, your doctor will definitely give you a list of guidelines to follow specifically tailored to your type of lipoplastic procedure.
