The first and best thing to do is avoiding buying a flight that's under a flight path. When buying a house you need to consider what airports are nearby and don't take the real estate agent's word for it when you ask them if the noise from the airplane is very loud. What you need to do is come back to the house early one morning before you buy and see if you can hear flights from Toronto to New York landing, and if you think that'll effect your sleep.

It's very likely that you'll get used to it, but it's still important to make changes to your house to insulate yourself from noise, especially from the planes taking off, flights from New York to San Francisco for example. The best thing that you can do to insulate your house from the noise is to consider whether it might be worth the investment of installing double glazing windows. This will have the effect of keeping much of the noise out. In places that are particularly close to the airport, especially airports where the flight schedule extends until late in the night and begins early in the morning you may even consider triple glazing.

You may think that altering your home in such a substantial way will be too costly, but for a little more sleep every morning, and a life that's a little quieter it's an investment that'll pay off. After all, you don't want 6:15 flights from Washington to Birmingham walking you up every day, do you?
