The eyes are perhaps the most depended upon parts of our bodies

, having lived life looking through the same ones all of our lives. But it is highly likely that our vision will start to blur or fade once we have reached 60. What eye condition we might develop by then can vary, of course, but for the vast majority of us, a cataract is most likely. Although worsening eye sight is arguably one of the most accepted conditions linked to age, with the image of grandparents wearing smartly styled spectacles a traditional idea, there is no reason why any condition should go untreated. Technology and continually developing techniques have meant that cataract surgery is now a simple and affordable procedure that restores near perfect vision in over 90 per cent of cases. The success rate is down to the reliability of the new lenses that are implanted, with both multifocal or monofocal lenses designed to such precision that they bring high clarity back to the lives of the patients that undergo the procedure. And these are the facts that explain why it is one of the most common eye surgeries performed the world over, though admittedly the prevalence of the eye condition amongst the over 50s age group is obviously a contributing factor too. What Surgery Entails The procedure is one of the most perfected in medicine, but it is rather simple in how it is done. The eye condition sees the lens of the eye begin to cloud over reducing the quality of sight and, if untreated, progressing to eventually leave the sufferer blind. The reason why so many of the older generation suffer from this condition is based on physiological facts. Age affects flexibility, and when it comes to the eye, this loss of flexibility means a loss of focus ability. The lens hardens and as this happens the quality of the light coming through the lens lessens, giving a cloudy appearance to what is seen. Other symptoms are blurred vision and a heightened sensitivity to light. The early stages of the condition can be countered by contact lenses and glasses, but they do not remove the problem. Only surgery can do this because it actually breaks up and then removes the hardened lens. The procedure entails gaining access to the lens, and then ultrasonic waves are used on the cloudy lens to break it down. Once the broken lens is removed, a replacement lens is then implanted, with a choice of lenses available. The most commonly used lens and, indeed, old reliable, is the monofocal, which is called so because it has just one focus zone through which the patient sees. It comes in two designs, with the focus zone either in the central area, so as to focus light from distant objects onto the retina, or wider on the lens wings to focus light from nearer objects. Multifocal lenses, meanwhile, have both focus zones, allowing for the patient to see both distant and near objects clearly. These can come in a variety of designs too, which allows the patient to choose the lenses that suit their needs best. How Life is Changed Of course, the whole point of undergoing cataract surgery is that sight is improved and the patient can return to living a full and wholesome life. What the surgery does is remove the impediment to perfect sight, but it also means that the risk of a cataract developing again is gone, so every patient can emerge fully confident they will never need the procedure again. And this is the chief factor. Lovers of golf can return to the course and be able to focus on the ball as it sails down the fairway. Lovers of art no longer need to squint to focus either on the work hanging in the gallery or the work they are painting themselves. Lovers of literature may never again have to worry about where they left their reading glasses. These results do depend on the choice of lens, with different monofocal lenses offering solutions to nearsightedness or farsightedness, and multifocal lenses solutions to both at the same time. However, the key fact to remember is that, through such surgeries, the sight that we have relied upon for so long can be enjoyed again.
